Currently, the amount of ethnic minorities (eg. black, Asian) is very low., and they are poorly represented in many parts of it. is this good or bad?
Britain is becoming a very multi-cultural society, and it is important that members of all ethnic communities have the chance to join the police force if they wish.
some people may feel discriminated against if they cannot get a job because of their background.
but is it really a problem? if police chief feel worried that they will be accused of discrimination if they do not hire people from ethnic minorities, they may end up choosing an applicant from one over a more qualified applicant who isn't from a minority.
in some area where there are isolated groups of ethnic minorities, racial tensions may be soothed by having police of different races aiding communication between them, so no group feels discriminated against.
but that doesn't mean that only people from ethnic majorities should be chosen. everybody deserves a fair chance, regardless of background, and employers such as the police force should just look at each individuals qualifications and suitability for the job.
yes, we should have people from all races and backgrounds working as policemen, but it doesn't matter what they are as long as they are doing their job properly.
